Marikkar and his large family live exactly opposite Wind Blend Kites resort.  He is the chairperson of the village mosque and fondly called the “king of the village”. The first ancestors from his family inhabited the village about 150 years. Marikkar studied up to 2nd grade and lived in Nigambo with his family. He worked in Colombo at the fuel station for around a year and spent several years around the same area as a laborer. At 24 years old, it was time for him to get married and so he returned to Kappalady. Soon he bought a shop at the village from his savings and ran it for 7 years as a local cafeteria. It was a successful business and earned him enough money to buy land and build a house. He started another business of distribution of fertilizers for farmers for 4-5 years.

A dry patch then for the local farmers affected his business and he had to sell part of his land to pay back his debts. Post the fertilizer business Marikkar worked as a chauffeur until his retirement.  

He has several children and grandchildren and his prime focus is to ensure that his grandchildren receive the best education.
